Problems with my New Desktop
Version 0.5

Recently I bought a new box (June 2008) and have been experiencing a whole slew of new problems that I never faced before. Till now, there are still some issues outstanding that I have yet to narrow down.

This is the basic specifications of the system

  • ASUS P5Q
  • Intel Q9450 Quad Core CPU
  • ASUS 9800GTX TOP 512MB (Overclocked 9800GTX)
  • 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066MHz CL5 Corsair RAM (TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF)
  • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Game
  • Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB SATA2 hard disk
  • Lite-On SATA DVD Writer
  • Antec 550W TruePower

Problems

Running GRID was a stuttering experience

Very frequently during racing, the whole game would suddenly slow down gradually and then return back to normal. Codemaster's acknowledged the issue and issued the patch v1.1 and patch v1.2.

But both did not solve my issue. A forum post claimed that forcing GRID to use only one CPU fixed the problem for him. No luck for me.

In the end, I found out that the cause was SpeedFan. As it kept checking the temperature every 10 seconds, the game slowed down around that time too. The solution was to close SpeedFan.

When activating Sleep mode, the Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB hard disk powers down, powers up, and powers down again

Everytime I activate the standby mode, the system shows the "Preparing for Stand By" screen and then blacks out. But you can hear the hard disk suddenly spinning up and then spinning down.

Resuming from Stand By Results in a 0x000000F4 BSOD 90% of the time

And I am still figuring out how to fix this. There is no easy way to revert back to non-AHCI mode so I am stuck with Hibernating the PC.

If you set custom clocks for CPU/RAM/VOLTAGE, your system will power up for a while, power off, and power on again everytime you switch off the mains

I find this quite bad as this means that the hard disk will need to half power-up, powers off, and then powers on again. This discourages me from overclocking.
